The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), a non-profit organization started in Washington, D.C., has been a trusted and respected leader for over half a century. It has been at the forefront of engaging leaders, policymakers, professionals, and parents around critical and timely issues that directly impact Black children and their families.
In 2005, the BCDI-Charlotte Affiliate (mission: to improve and advance the quality of life for Black and Brown children and families through education and advocacy) was established to utilize volunteers at the grassroots level to implement programs, engage in advocacy, and provide services that improve the quality of life for children and families within the Charlotte community.
In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, BCDI-Charlotte continued to serve families and prove to Mecklenburg and surrounding counties that it was a preeminent voice for families of color. This attracted the attention of the philanthropic community, assisting the organization with its transition to a more permeant structure. As BCDI-Charlotte’s influence became more visible across both Carolinas, it became obvious that the movement was indeed growing. In 2024, BCDI-Charlotte transitioned to BCDI-Carolinas with the intent to continue building momentum towards achieving NBCDI’s Eight Essential Outcomes for Black Child Development.
